He was all but biting through his tongue trying not to utter his fears aloud, just pleading in his head with whatever entity might control the universe that she never uttered the name that echoed in his head. Honestly, it was far too much to be a coincidence, but some naïve and foolish part of him still hoped. Until Belinda’s next words shattered his hope and left him reeling.

“I took the job. It was just as good pay, and I didn’t have to dance. It turned out I was actually really good at it, too. I just never felt like I could get the whole story about anything from anyone but soon learned that’s just the way things were. Nobody wanted to tell everyone everything. Dimitri swore to me it was just part of the atmosphere. Heck, I hadn’t even shared my full story.”

As much as he didn’t want to confirm, Damon needed to know what he was dealing with so he had to be sure, “Dimitri?”

“Yeah, he was the owner of the strip club.” He really didn’t need more with the way her face took on a green tint and scrunched up in disgust. Still, he pushed, “What’s Dimitri’s last name?”

Please don’t say Makarova. Please, don’t say…

“Makarova.”

“And…. When you said earlier that you had a married name,” he tilted her chin up and kept his words as gentle as possible, “You were once Belinda Makarova, weren’t you?”

Belinda just nodded her head, but it was all he needed. No wonder Sydney had kept this information from him. If he’d been aware of this, he’d have been obligated to expose her whereabouts as part of the treaty between Makarova’s family and the Rossi family. Damon wasn’t sure he could have outed Belinda then, and he sure as fuck knew he couldn’t betray her now. He also couldn’t harbor her without starting an all-out war. All it took was for Belinda to snuggle in closer to him and he knew what he was doing.

Motherfucker. Looks like I’m about to start a war.
